Finding the right travel uniform falls somewhere between looking pulled together and being functional. Too often the latter is forgotten to accomplish the former.

I love the idea of dressing up on the plane, wearing a chic suit with a silk blouse and a great classic sneaker, but reality and modern travel are not built for this. So, we find the in between balance, the kind of thing that’s practical but we still feel great in. I love how the 90s icons did it. As well as Kendall for Gucci and Mary Kate and Ashley with all the layers on layers.

Over the years my travel uniform (including my go-to outfit, carry-on tote and all the things inside, and the extras I can’t travel without) has held tried and true with, I hope, a good balance of looking polished without losing its function.

A Basic Formula

Go-To Outfit: Pant (with a bit of stretch) + Tee Shirt + Sweater + Sneaker

Issue Twelve dark grey sweater, The Row light grey sweater, High Sport pants in black and brown (all 3 outfits), Adidas sneakers (left and right) similar here, old Celine big bag - used, slightly smaller version here, Goldie white tee shirt, Raey sweater, Toteme boots- used tan ones in size 9 and size 6, Metier bag- similar here and here and more on Metier below, Veronica de Piante blazer- similar here, unmarked scarf from a sample sale at The Line (RIP).
  • Pants: They need to be comfortable enough to sit in for a long period of time but also look polished. I have been wearing High Sport pants, they look like regular pants but feel like leggings. I also wear thicker leggings, like these from Toteme with a zip detail and these from Another Tomorrow which have a nice seam up for the front for a more pant-like look. If I am doing a red-eye, I sometimes wear sweatpants, I like these from Les Tien right now and in the winter I love these cashmere pants.

  • Tee: a basic tee if it is warm where you are departing or arriving from or for the times you end up sweating dealing with luggage or lines. I like to wear navy or black (just a little less risky when you are stuck with what you have on your body).

  • Sweater: a lightweight cashmere or cotton sweater in a neutral color I throw on as a top layer. One that can also easily fit into my carry on or tie around my shoulders.

  • Blazer: I often wear a blazer or light jacket. This helps the outfit look more like a real outfit, less like an upgraded version of a sweatsuit. Same rule as the sweater- needs to be light enough it can easily fold into my carry-on tote, I never keep on during the flight- too stiff.

  • Sneakers: go with whatever you feel best in, I prefer a non athletic style. I like Adidas Sambas or Gazelles, MyTheresa has a bunch of sizes in. Also love these from Loewe and The Row.

From top left clockwise: High Sport cotton sweater, High Sport Pants, Goldie Tee, Falke active breeze socks - I like the loose ankle trim, Adidas sneakers, The Row blazer
