Coat Uniform Strategy
A practical and investment worthy coat wardrobe.
Building a coat wardrobe comes from a practical place. Of course we want to love what we buy, but it’s one of those categories that really needs to make sense for our life. Are you in freezing temperatures? Are you walking around a city or getting in and out of a car? Is the coat the look or just a throw on for the comings and goings? We already know Phoebe Philo does everything perfectly but her coat assortment right now is really something to take note of. She has ticked every box of what we need in a coat wardrobe- menswear, shearling, wraps, casual etc- that feels relevant right now (and for years to come). If only we could all have a coat closet of Phoebe Philo only, but alas, here are some great alternatives. And as always, it’s better to have fewer pieces, each with more purpose.
The Staple Coat
This is the coat. The timeless and classic main event. It’s long, warm, and the one you buy carefully. Consider fabric that will have a long life (wool or cashmere), shapes that are timeless (wrap or something tailored), and color (I recommend sticking to black or navy. I would invest in this one, because it’s the coat you wear for years.

I’ve had an old Céline coat that I wore for ten years and updated it last year with the Phoebe Philo coat. It was an investment, but I know I will wear it for the next decade. The fabric is unbelievable. I love a classic wrap coat, this Scanlan Theodore midnight navy coat is a really smart purchase. Timeless and great fabric for price. This Toteme coat I talk about at length here, its a great one. The Guivila Heritage is a tailored, menswear blazer style. I do not wear this shape as often, but I love how it looks. It’s warm and the tailoring feels clean. It works when you want the look of a blazer but need real insulation.
Wrap
I love a wrap coat, it feels like you can just fold yourself into it and super comfy.
