Uniform Concept 009: Finishing Accents
Building your uniform with styling details from the SS25 shows.
One of my favorite things about a new season of shows is noticing all the small, subtle details included on the runway that I can incorporate into my wardrobe right away. I love seeing unexpected styling that inspires easy ways to make the pieces I already own feel new.
We still have more ideas to look forward to from the Paris shows but below is what I’m excited to try out now.
Scarf Draped Over Your Bag
This detail actually felt completely new. “On-the-go luxe” really sums up the whole idea. It’s such a chic way to carry an item we actually need and already have—will definitely be trying with my airport carry-on. The key here is the oversized scarf so it drapes down the bag intentionally. I would tuck the scarf inside the bag and drape over one side.
Necklace over Turtleneck
I love this simple but impactful way to wear a turtleneck and necklace; it feels elegant and understated and is so easy to pull off. Most everyone has a turtleneck and a favorite necklace to throw over it. I like the chain link style necklace but also so nice with something longer or a cool sculptural piece like the Alaia below.
If you are in need of a new turtleneck, my favorites are COS and Sold Out NYC.
Shorten Your Crossbody Bag
When I first saw Kendall wearing her crossbody bag shortened all the way up right under the arm and pushed behind her, I didn’t know exactly what what I was looking at. It’s almost a sporty way to carry a bag, and also very practical for running around all day. I like how this was done with different sizes, too. A small bag feels more obvious but the bigger size is so unexpected. This also taps back into the east-west bag shape that Alaia made into such a big trend this past spring season.
A Perfect Sleeve
Probably the most popular look from my Instagram feed out of Milan is this perfect sleeve scrunch. It’s effortless and so easy to incorporate. Pull out your most structured knit or top and push up in sections evenly above the elbow—I know some people will even place rubber bands around the sleeve to hold the scrunch in place. This knit from Isabel Marant, also in a bold red, would be a perfect piece for re-creating this look.
Semi-Sheer Tights with a Minimal Shoe
I don’t normally love tights with open toes but I’m coming around. I love how Khaite did it with the contrast of the summer shoe and a semi-sheer tight; not fully opaque or too bare. I think the below shoes would be great to style this way. I love the silver detail on The Row shoe—it would be so pretty with a tight—and the square-toe from Toteme is a fun 90s throwback for this look. Same with the white Jil Sander shoes, I’m not typically a white-shoe person but would love the contrast here with a black tight. If you need a pair of semi-sheer, I love Falke; they last for years.
New Knit Layering
I am always very excited about a new way to wear knits. These combos feel a bit 90s, the trend picking up some traction when Morgan Stewart posted wearing a tank over a long sleeve from her line Rengglli. J.Crew also does a good knit tank, which would be so nice under this COS sweater.
Jacket Effortlessly Over Your Shoulders
A coat on your shoulders is always a styling go-to, but in these looks it’s done with pieces that make it all feel a bit more effortless and less stiff. Go for a collarless jacket and stick with neutrals. If you’re looking for new pieces, I love the shade and effortless silhouette of this Khaite one below or this wool one from Rohe for a thinner but warm option. Would also love this Lafayette coat styled with a wide-leg pant or matching hemline.
Extra Long Belt
I love how this extra long belt makes this Jil Sander look feel a bit tougher and makes the suit more modern. If a belt isn’t meant to have the long end, you can always buy a double wrap—like this Toteme one—and punch a hole in it (any shoe repair should be able to do it for you). And how cute is that floral runway floor!
Have fun digging through your closet to try out some of these new styling updates.
