This holiday week I am going back to a summer classic that I feel like always needs a subtle, elevated styling take. Pairing with staples you already have in your closet, below are seven ways to update your classic stripes.
Classic & Clean
I often like to keep classics when it comes to styling. Paired with a simple black or white trouser, a striped tee is such a good go-to outfit. Any tee will work but I am partial to the oversized fit of the Matteau one and the classic Kule take. Also, I can’t not mention the OG Saint James tee, a great one to always have in your drawer. J.Crew did a nice one too. This also works with shorts, jeans, skirts or trousers. The point is just to keep— it clean if going for a short I recommend a trouser style (these from Toteme are great!), for a jean- a clean wash or white is nice—love these from AGolde and these from the Row.
With Baggy Jeans
Let the jeans slouch to offset a simple tee. The white drawstring waist brings in a touch of nautical and brown leather details ground it all. Very into this idea with bermuda shorts—above are from Zara and almost sold out. This would also be a great way to recycle an old pair of jeans you have with a tailor! Love this pre owned tee from Chanel and Cos has a good one with a cute contrast collar as well.
A Beachside Take
Allison Bornstein’s surfer nephew trend keeps popping up in my feeds. I like this mini trend with a striped tee— feels a touch more grown up. Go subtle with the beach-y pieces and stick to classics (Ray Bans, canvas tote, stripe tee obviously) for the main components. This La Ligne tee has such a good shape and I love the contrast tape seams.
This same trend can even be a bit more polished. The Matteau fisherman trouser with a slim striped tank is a chic take. I like the touches of red with surfer details in the accessories. Also love this looser tank from Massimo Dutti.
Utility Details
Utility details are always a good stand by for styling a striped tee. This pant is a more polished version. This exaggerated muscle tee shape feels fresh (love it over swim like the left image above from Matteau—that tee is unfortunately sold out!). The mix of browns in leather makes it feel less matchy-matchy and more relaxed. This outfit feels like the kind of thing you would wear on vacation and throw your swimsuit in the pouch for a last-minute dip.
Layering
Taking a page from a fall styling trick—throw a knit or heavier weight striped tee over your shoulders. It works well with the same stripe, same color or totally different. Great for any of the shaped tees above, just throw on of the below over and tie. I keep noticing stripe polos bubbling up, not super retro stripes but cleaner and more relaxed. Using this an excuse to pick one of these up now.
Happy 4th of July!
